Why your AC's SEER2 rating matters more than its brand

Walk into any HVAC showroom conversation and you'll hear brands discussed like sports teams. Carrier versus Trane versus Lennox, each with loyalists who'd sooner switch churches.

Here's what two decades in the field teaches you: the badge on the condenser matters far less than two other numbers — the SEER2 rating, and the quality of the installation.

What SEER2 actually measures

SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, version 2) measures cooling delivered per unit of electricity across a simulated season. The 2023 revision tests under higher static pressure — closer to how real ductwork behaves — which is why SEER2 numbers read slightly lower than the old SEER figures for equivalent equipment.

The federal minimum in the South is 14.3 SEER2. Premium variable-speed equipment reaches 24+.

The math that matters

In Austin's climate, a typical 3-ton system runs roughly 2,000 cooling hours a year. Moving from a 14.3 to an 18 SEER2 system trims cooling energy roughly 20% — call it $250–$400 a year at current rates, more as rates climb.

But the curve flattens: 18 to 22 SEER2 saves noticeably less than 14 to 18 did. Efficiency dollars are best spent up to the knee of that curve, and after that, on your ducts.

Where the brand argument collapses

The uncomfortable industry secret: most major brands share component suppliers. Compressors from Copeland, controls from a handful of vendors, coils of broadly similar metallurgy. Reliability studies show smaller gaps between brands than between installation quality tiers.

A mid-tier system installed with a proper load calculation, verified charge, and sealed ducts will outperform and outlast a flagship system slapped in by rule of thumb. Every time.

What to actually ask your contractor

  1. Will you perform a Manual J load calculation — and show me?
  2. What's my duct leakage, measured in CFM?
  3. Will I get commissioning data — measured airflow and refrigerant charge — in writing?

If the answer to any of these is a shrug, the brand on the box won't save you.
